Don’t make the same DUMB mistakes I made
When I got started in the antiques business, I wish someone shared with me the tips and strategies I needed to succeed as an antiques dealer. I didn’t know anything about renting booth space at an antique mall, nor did I realize I could find gems and great bargains by shopping at those same antique malls!
Like many new dealers, I went out and purchased any and everything that sounded like a good deal… My house soon became cluttered to the point where I couldn’t even walk around or sit on my own sofa. Mind you, we had five kids in the house and it started to become a safety issue with all the stuff lying around.
At one point, we went to an auction and purchased so much stuff, we had to make 8 trips back and forth to get our stuff – and let me elaborate we had the largest truck u-haul had available (actually, it was a Penske truck) — 8 trips! We didn’t have room to put the stuff in the warehouse and ended up having to get another warehouse and storage unit to pack the stuff into! This is what happens when you’re not able to control yourself
Anyhow, I loved buying antiques and somehow got side-tracked into buying junk and all other types of stuff. While the junk paid me well, I found myself working 14-18 hour days. I no longer had the same enthusiasm and passion I did when I started out with antiques!
Which leads to my next point… Picking a niche and sticking with it!
Specialists Make More Money
If you want to sell junk, then specialize in junk… If you want to sell antiques, then specialize in antiques!
In fact, if you want to specialize in antiques, pick one or two sub-niches within the antiques industry and specialize in those. I finally figured out that specialists work less hours while making so much more money!
When you become a specialist in a particular niche, you don’t have to go out and find stuff… People bring it to you. And when they bring it to you, you often get better deals and you get to pick the cream of the crop.
A great example of this type of antiques dealer is a guy named Jeff Bridgman.
He buys, sells and collects antique American flags. He was interviewed by FOX News because of his expert status, see video below (he appears 20 seconds into the video):
